Abstract
& Co, 1995. 3rd ed. ISBN 0-7216-5066-X. Cloth, $695.00; pp 4,496; Donald Resnick, MD Philadelphia, Pa: W. B. Saunders 5,594 figures; tables. It has been 7 years since the previous edition of Donald Resnickâs magnum opus. Readers of the previous book know the Resnick formula: comprehensive musculoskeletal coverage with entire volumes in the chapters on osteonecrosis and lesions, where the work of Drs Madewell and Resnick should be soft-tissue integrated. on arthritis, elegant cryotome anatomic correlation, and understated, balanced writing that favors insight over teaching aids. The third edition is much the same, but with less of the stodgy emphasis on older modalities. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging information has been added throughout the six volumes. There are 3,000 new images, many of them MR images. Three chapters are now devoted to MR imaging including a book-length chapter that fairly comprehensively coyers knee, shoulder, ankle, wrist, elbow, and hip MR imaging. Can one buy the new edition of Resnickâs book and forgo purchase of other MR imaging books? Well, not quite. Radiologists performing a large variety of musculoskeletal MR studies would need to consult other sources on occasion. Also, this book does not substitute for an MR imaging atlas of normal anatomy; normal MR anatomy figures are scattered throughout each joint New chapter section. in this edition is a must-read on spinal orthopedics and a chapter on sports medicine imaging. Dr Resnick has beautifully incorporated literature of the past 7 years; references at the end of each chapter have expanded an average of 25%. Fine discussions of recent topics such as synovitis-pustulosishyperostosis-osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome and bacillary angiomatosis are here. There are too many superb chapters in this book to list. The coverage of arthritis and infection is truly comprehensive, tumors and trauma slightly less. Sixty-six of the 95 chapters are written by Resnick. This remarkable accomplishment explains why this book is such a smooth read. Notable redundancies occur only The binding, print quality and images are first rate. The index, critical in a work of this size, is enormous and superb. For example, most listed entities have subheadings of âdifferential diagnosis.â Consequently, differential diagnoses are more accessible than are generally appreciated. How could a great book get even betten? The zeroradiography and low kilovoltage radiography chapters are superfluous, and several chapters are not very informative. For example, art hro graphy and bone biopsy chapters do not adequately describe techniques and pitfalls, and the chapter on plain radiographic techniques does not explain indications for many views. A number of topics merit more attention including brachial plexus, thoracic outlet, and jaw region radiography. The publishers unwisely elected to remove subject headings from the covers of each volume. Readers will want to hand label the coyers to speed retrieval of information. Dr Resnickâs book nevertheless remains the premier general musculoskeletal work and further distances itself from its competitors with this edition. The radiologist who owns the previous edition and has dutifully kept up with the musculoskeletal literature, may elect to wait for the next edition by Resnick. Otherwise it is difficult to think of a radiologist performing musculoskeletal work who should not buy or have access to this monumental work. The price may seem high, but computes to only $40 per 300 pages. Reviewed by Anton M. Allen III, MD #{149} Radiology April 1996
